The Game
Croquet originated in England during the middle of the 19th century. The game today is played with colored balls, wickets, stakes, and mallets. The course is set up in a diamond-style shape and requires strategic movement of the balls through the wickets. There are usually 9 wickets between 2 stakes.
Players take a shot at their ball using their mallet. As players move throughout the court, they continue to take shots with their mallets. This is why the Sarasota County Croquet Club is known as "The Great Shots."
The club helps members understand the rules of play. Players can play individually (singles) or with a partner (doubles). In the case of tournaments, players sometimes form teams.
The Benefits
A game of croquet does more than just get you outside—the game is one of strategy, partnerships, and movement. Here are a few of the benefits of playing croquet:
- Croquet will challenge you mentally and intellectually due to the strategic nature of the game, which requires focus.
- The exercise is low-impact and easy on your joints. In fact, according to the United States Croquet Association (USCA), players walk an estimated two miles during an average match. The enjoyment of the game makes this an easy two miles.
- Socialization is a key benefit of playing croquet. With more than 200 members, you're sure to find new friends and croquet partners.
- Croquet improves your mood and self-esteem. The fresh air, the challenge of the game, and your new friends, all contribute to good feelings on and off the court.
From simple games of "Golf Croquet" to tournaments, there's something for every level of interest. The benefits are priceless when it comes to improving your mind, body, and spirit.
